The key question is whether you actually need a full visitor visa or just an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority). Many travellers from Western countries and parts of Asia do not need a New Zealand Tourist Visa at all just the NZeTA, which takes minutes to apply for and is usually approved within 24 hours.

Do You Need a New Zealand Tourist Visa or an NZeTA?
This is the first thing to establish, and it depends on your nationality.
If you hold a passport from one of 67 visa-waiver countries, you do NOT need a visitor visa. Instead, you need an NZeTA a quick online approval that allows you to visit for up to 3 months (6 months for UK citizens). See the NZeTA section below.
If your country is NOT on the visa-waiver list, you need a full visitor visa. This applies to citizens of Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, China, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Nigeria, and most other South Asian and African nations.
You also need a full visitor visa if:
- You want to stay longer than 3 months (6 months for UK citizens), regardless of nationality
- You have criminal convictions
- You have been deported from or refused entry to any country
Visa-Waiver Countries (NZeTA Route)
Citizens of the following 67 countries and territories can visit New Zealand without a visa, using the NZeTA:

Australian citizens and permanent residents do not need an NZeTA or a visa they can enter freely.
The NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority)
If your country is on the visa-waiver list above, the NZeTA is all you need.
How to apply:
- Download the NZeTA app (iOS or Android) or visit the Immigration NZ website
- Enter your passport details and upload a photo
- Answer a few health and character questions
- Pay the fee
- Receive your NZeTA (usually within 24 hours; allow up to 72 hours)

The International Visitor Levy (IVL) is a mandatory NZD $100 charge that funds tourism infrastructure and conservation. It applies to almost all visitors — Australian and New Zealand citizens are exempt.
Validity: 2 years from the date of approval, allowing multiple entries of up to 3 months each (6 months for UK citizens). Maximum total stay: 6 months in any 12-month rolling period.
The Full Visitor Visa (For Non-Waiver Countries)
If your country is not on the visa-waiver list, or you need to stay longer than the NZeTA allows, you need a full visitor visa.

The total cost for a standard visitor visa (Band C — “Rest of World”) is:

Essential:
- Valid passport: Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date from New Zealand
- Completed application form: Online through the INZ website, or paper Form 1017 submitted through VFS Global
- Recent passport photograph: 35mm × 45mm, white background, taken within the last 6 months
- Proof of sufficient funds: Bank statements (at least 3 months, ideally 6) showing you can support yourself during your stay
Financial requirements (INZ guidelines):
- Self-funded visitors: NZD $1,000 per month of intended stay
- Visitors with pre-paid accommodation: NZD $400 per month

Strongly recommended:
- Return or onward travel tickets: Showing you have a confirmed departure

Application Process
Online (recommended):
You cannot apply directly on the Immigration NZ website you need a RealMe login first. RealMe is the New Zealand government’s secure authentication system, and it is mandatory for all online visa applications.
- Go to Immigration New Zealand and click “Apply Now”
- You will be redirected to RealMe select “Create your RealMe login” if you do not have one
- Enter your email address, choose a username and password, set up security questions, and verify your email
- Once your RealMe account is active, log in to Immigration Online using your RealMe credentials
- Select “Visitor Visa” and complete the application form
- Upload all supporting documents in PDF format
- Pay the fee by credit card (NZD $441 total)
- Submit and wait for a decision
Important: RealMe account creation is free and takes about 5–10 minutes. Keep your RealMe username and password safe you will need them to check your application status and receive your visa decision.
Paper (through VFS Global):
- Download and complete Form 1017 from the INZ website
- Gather all supporting documents
- Submit in person at your nearest VFS Global visa application centre
- Pay the visa fee plus the VFS service fee
- Collect your passport when notified

Apply at least 4–6 weeks before your trip to allow for any complications, but do not be surprised if you hear back much sooner.
Common Reasons for Refusal
- Insufficient funds: Not enough money shown, or funds that appear recently deposited to inflate the balance
- Weak ties to home country: No clear reason to return (no job, no family, no property)
- Incomplete application: Missing documents, blank fields, or unsigned forms
- False or inconsistent information: Any discrepancy between what you claim and what the documents show
- Character concerns: Undisclosed criminal history, previous overstays, or prior visa refusals in any country
- Health concerns: Certain medical conditions may require additional clearance
- Vague travel purpose: No clear plan for what you will do in New Zealand
If Your Application Is Refused
You can request a reconsideration within 14 calendar days of the refusal decision, provided you are still in New Zealand or hold a valid interim visa.
