Lake Bled is one of those places that looks too good to be real. A tiny island with a church sitting in the middle of an emerald green lake, a medieval castle perched on a cliff above it, and the Julian Alps rising behind everything. It sounds like a fairytale, and it mostly lives up to it.
But here is what the photos do not tell you: Lake Bled is small. You can walk around the entire lake in about 90 minutes. That means you do not need weeks to see everything. Two days is comfortable, and even a packed day trip from Ljubljana works if you plan it right.
I have put together everything you need to know before visiting, from the must do activities to the practical details like transport, costs, and the best time to go.
Take a Pletna Boat to Bled Island
This is the thing everyone comes here to do, and for good reason. The pletna is a traditional flat bottomed wooden boat, rowed by hand. It is the only way to reach Bled Island unless you swim or rent your own boat.
The pletna boats operate on a fill and go system. There is no fixed timetable. You turn up at one of the boarding points around the lake, and the boat leaves once it has around 12 to 20 passengers. The ride takes about 15 minutes each way, and you get roughly 40 to 45 minutes on the island.
Once on the island, you climb the 99 stone steps up to the Church of the Mother of God. Inside, there is a wishing bell. Tradition says your wish comes true if you ring it and the bell sounds clearly. Whether or not you believe that, the views from the island back towards the castle and mountains are worth the climb.
Pletna boat prices (2026):
The round trip costs 20 EUR per adult and 10 EUR per child aged 4 to 12. Important: pletna boats accept cash only. No cards.
If you want an alternative, there is also an electric boat line that costs 16 EUR per adult and accepts both cash and card. Or you can rent a self row wooden boat for about 25 to 30 EUR for the first hour, which gives you the freedom to go at your own pace.
The Church of the Mother of God charges a separate entrance fee of 12 EUR per adult.
Tip: Go early. The Mlino dock on the north shore has the shortest route to the island. Tour buses usually arrive around 10:30am, so if you get there before 9:30am you will avoid the worst of the crowds.
Visit Bled Castle
Bled Castle sits on a steep cliff 130 metres above the lake. It is one of the oldest castles in Slovenia, with records going back over a thousand years. The views from the top are the best you will get of the lake, the island, and the surrounding mountains.
Inside the castle grounds, there is a museum covering the history of Bled from the Bronze Age onwards, a printing press where you can print your own souvenir, and a small wine cellar. The castle chapel is worth a quick look too.
Bled Castle prices (2026):
Adults pay 19 EUR, students 11.50 EUR, and children aged 6 to 14 pay 7 EUR. Children under 6 enter free. If you are visiting as a family, one child up to age 14 gets in free when accompanied by two adults.
Groups of 10 or more get reduced rates: 16 EUR for adults, 10 EUR for students, and 6 EUR for children.
Opening hours:
The castle is open every day of the year. From November to March it opens 8am to 6pm, and from April to October it stays open until 8pm.
Tip: Late afternoon is a good time to visit. The light is softer, the crowds thin out, and you can stay until the golden hour views over the lake.
Walk Around the Lake
The path around Lake Bled is about 6 kilometres and takes roughly 90 minutes at a relaxed pace. It is flat, well maintained, and easy enough for anyone with reasonable mobility. You pass through wooded sections, open stretches with mountain views, and a few spots where you can sit by the water.
This is not a hike. It is a pleasant walk, and one of the best free things to do in Bled. The western side of the lake tends to be quieter than the town side.
Hike to Ojstrica Viewpoint
If you have seen those perfect aerial looking photos of Lake Bled with the island centred below, they were probably taken from Ojstrica. This is a short but steep hike that rewards you with the most photographed view of the lake.
The trail starts near Velika Zaka bay on the western shore, close to Camping Bled. It takes about 20 minutes to reach the viewpoint, but do not underestimate it. The final section involves scrambling over jagged limestone rocks, and it gets slippery after rain. Wear proper walking shoes, not sandals.
The hike is free and does not require any permits. For the best experience, go at sunrise. The mist hovering over the lake in the early morning light is something special, and you will have the viewpoint mostly to yourself.
Walk Through Vintgar Gorge
Vintgar Gorge is about 4 kilometres northwest of Bled and makes for a brilliant half day excursion. A wooden walkway follows the Radovna River through a narrow gorge for 1.6 kilometres, ending at the 13 metre high Sum Waterfall.
The gorge is beautiful. The water is a vivid turquoise, and the walkway takes you right alongside it, sometimes suspended above it. It gets busy in summer, but if you go early (aim for the first entry slot) it is much more enjoyable.
Vintgar Gorge prices (2026):
Adults, students, and seniors pay 10 EUR. Children aged 3 to 15 pay 5 EUR. Pets cost 3 EUR. Parking is 5 EUR for the duration of your visit, and a free shuttle runs from the car park.
Helmets are mandatory and provided free at the Visitors Centre.

April to late May: 9am to 4:30pm
Late May to late June: 8am to 5:30pm
Late June to late August: 7am to 6:30pm

There are also guided tours daily at 4pm for 28 EUR per adult and 18 EUR per child. These have limited spots, so book ahead if you are interested.
Ride the Straza Summer Toboggan
If you want something fun that is not another church or castle, the Straza toboggan run delivers. A chairlift takes you up the hill above the south shore of the lake, and then you ride a toboggan track back down with views of the lake and mountains the whole way.
Straza prices (2026):
A combined chairlift and toboggan ride costs 13 EUR for adults, 11 EUR for children aged 8 to 13, and 8 EUR for children aged 6 to 7. Children under 6 ride free.
If you enjoy it and want to go again, two rides cost 22 EUR for adults and three rides cost 32 EUR. You can also ride the chairlift on its own for 7 EUR (same price for all ages).
Swim in the Lake
Yes, you can swim in Lake Bled. The water temperature reaches 22 to 24 degrees in July and August, which is refreshing without being painfully cold. Swimming is generally possible from mid-June to early September.
There are two main options:
Grajsko Kopalissce (Castle Bathing Area): This is the main public swimming area below the castle. It has diving boards, slides, sun loungers, and lifeguards on duty. Entry costs 13 EUR per adult for the day. It is well set up and family friendly.
Velika Zaka: On the western shore near the rowing centre. This is a more natural, free swimming spot popular with locals. There are no facilities, but the water is just as clean and the setting is quieter.
Try the Bled Cream Cake (Kremsnita)
You cannot visit Bled without trying kremsnita. This is the town’s signature dessert: layers of crispy puff pastry filled with vanilla custard and whipped cream. It has been made in Bled since the 1950s, and the town takes it seriously.
The original recipe comes from the Park Hotel’s pastry kitchen. A slice there costs around 5.50 to 6.50 EUR, while lakefront restaurants charge up to 8 EUR.
For a more local experience, try Slascicarna Zima. It is a small pastry shop a short walk from the lake, and many locals consider it the best kremsnita in town. Cafe Park is another good option.
How to Get to Lake Bled from Ljubljana
Lake Bled is about 55 kilometres northwest of Ljubljana. Getting there is straightforward, and you have several options.
By bus (recommended for most travellers):
Arriva operates buses from Ljubljana bus station to Bled. The journey takes 60 to 80 minutes, with more than 25 departures daily. Tickets cost around 6.30 EUR on weekdays and 2.10 EUR on weekends. Buses drop you off in Bled town centre, a short walk from the lake.
By train:
Trains run roughly 10 times daily and take 45 to 60 minutes depending on the service. Tickets cost between 5.10 and 9.10 EUR. One important thing: the train station is called Lesce Bled, and it is about 5 kilometres from the lake. You will need to take a local bus or taxi from the station.
By taxi:
A taxi from Ljubljana costs approximately 45 to 55 EUR and takes about 45 minutes. If you want a fixed price transfer, book in advance through a local company like Bled Taxi Transfer.
By car:
The drive takes about 40 minutes on the E61 highway. Roads are well maintained and easy to navigate. Parking in Bled itself can be tricky during peak season, so arrive early or consider parking on the outskirts.
Best Time to Visit Lake Bled
Late May, June, and September are the best months. The weather is warm, the hills are green, the lake is at its most beautiful, and the summer crowds have not fully arrived (or have already started to leave). September also brings autumn colours to the surrounding forests.
July and August are the busiest months. The lake path gets crowded, parking fills up quickly, and prices peak. That said, these are also the best months for swimming.
October can be lovely if you get lucky with the weather. The autumn foliage around the lake is gorgeous, and there are far fewer tourists.
November to March is quiet and often grey. Fog sits on the lake for days at a time in November. In winter, the lake occasionally freezes and the mountains are dusted with snow. It is beautiful in a completely different way, but many attractions have limited hours or close entirely.
Where to Stay
Bled has accommodation for every budget.
Budget: Hostels in Bled start from around 18 to 25 EUR per night for a dorm bed. Bled Hostel is well reviewed and centrally located.
Mid range: Guesthouses and small hotels around the lake run from 60 to 120 EUR per night for a double room. Look for places slightly away from the main promenade for better value.
Splurge: The Grand Hotel Toplice and Vila Bled are the premium options, both with direct lake access and mountain views.
If you are on a tight budget, consider staying in nearby Zirovnica or Radovljica. Both are a short drive or bus ride from the lake, and accommodation is noticeably cheaper.

Quick Tips for Visiting Lake Bled
Bring cash. Several attractions and the pletna boats do not accept cards.
Wear proper shoes if you plan to hike Ojstrica or walk through Vintgar Gorge. The trails are rocky and can be slippery.
Visit the island and castle early in the morning or late in the afternoon. The middle of the day is when tour groups descend.
The lake path is wheelchair accessible for most of its length, though some sections near Velika Zaka have uneven ground.
Lake Bled is a great base for exploring the rest of Slovenia. Ljubljana is under an hour away, Lake Bohinj is 30 minutes by car, and Triglav National Park is right on your doorstep.
